1972-03-04 Carlos Monzon w rsc 5 (15) Denny Moyer, Sports Palace, Rome, Italy - WORLD. Referee: Lorenzo Fortunato. Holding his own for the opening four rounds, banging in left hooks and solid rights while boxing behind a high guard, Moyer (158¾) made things difficult for the champion. Although Monzon (159) got in some heavy blows Moyer always came straight back, shaking the Argentinian up with a smashing right to the jaw in the third. In the fifth, however, Moyer was forced to take a compulsory eight count as Monzon (159) cut loose. When Moyer got up, immediately being put under pressure again, the referee called it off at 1.05 of the session. Afterwards, Moyer stated that even though Monzon had wrestled him to the ground he was fighting back at the stoppage.
The European champion and top-rated contender according to The Ring magazine, Jean-Claude Bouttier, was next in line to take on Monzon. With a record of 56 wins from 60 contests, he was a solid puncher, especially to the body, and had beaten Karl-Heinz Klein, Jacques Marty, Stanley Hayward, Jo Gonzales, Pascal Di Benedetto, Tom Bethea, Lonnie Harris, Juan Carlos Duran, Doyle Baird and Fabio Bettini.
