1976-09-18 Eckhard Dagge w pts 15 Emile Griffith, National Hall, Berlin, Germany - WBC. Referee: Angelo Poletti. Scorecards: 149-143, 148-145, 145-145. Defending for the first time, Dagge (154) came up against the 38-year-old Griffith (151½) who at times made him look positively ordinary when turning the clock back. Having scored so well in the early rounds it looked as though Griffith might be on to a winner, but gradually the tall, rangy Dagge came back with solid rights and left hooks. Twice Dagge went low, in the second and 12th, but he could not put Griffith away, even unintentionally, and soon went back to the jab. The ninth was probably the turning point for Dagge when he finally hurt Griffith with a big right hand. From there on in, Dagge began to pick his punches better, with the last two sessions being impressive for the champion as the American began to fade through tiredness.
