1977-05-21 Miguel Angel Cuello w co 9 (15) Jesse Burnett, Louis 11 Stadium, Monte Carlo, Monaco - WBC. Referee: Ray Solis. Fighting for the vacant title Cuello (173) eventually put paid to Burnett (169), who was counted out at 2.49 of the ninth round after a punishing fight that saw both men in trouble at varying stages. Pressing right from the start despite carrying an already damaged left eye, Cuello generally forced Burnett around the ring before being decked by a cracking right hand in the fourth. It was clear that Burnett was the classier man, and throughout the contest he would pick his punches with accuracy although Cuello would always come back slugging. In the seventh and eighth Burnett had Cuello rocking on several occasions, but unable to find a finishing blow and tiring rapidly the ninth round would be his last.

Having been told that he must defend the title against Mate Parlov within 90 days of beating Burnett, a succession of injuries suffered by Cuello forced repeated postponements that pushed the date on from 1 October to 7 January 1978.
