1982-05-22 Alexis Arguello w co 5 (15) Andy Ganigan, Aladdin Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBC. Referee: Carlos Padilla. Making a shocking start, Arguello (133¾), caught completely cold, was dropped by a left hook in the opening session before being in even more trouble before the bell rang. It looked like being a major upset, but after boxing his way out of further embarrassment the champion went on to floor Ganigan (135) in the third only for the latter to come roaring back with heavy rights and lefts which left him badly stunned. But like all great fighters when they are hurt, Arguello sensibly boxed his way back again prior to unloading a right-left to the head which smashed Ganigan to the floor, where he was counted out nine seconds after the bell to end round five.

Later in the year, the WBA announced that as from 1 January 1983 all world title bouts held under their auspices would be contested over 12 rounds.

Already the WBA junior welterweight champion, after Arguello relinquished the WBC version of the lightweight title in February 1983 Edwin Rosario and Jose Luis Ramirez were matched in order to find a successor.
