1982-06-26 Leroy Haley w pts 15 Saoul Mamby, Front Row Theatre, Cleveland, Ohio, USA - WBC. Referee: Jackie Keough. Scorecards: 145-142, 148-144, 143-144. Allowing Haley (139½) to get away to a good start in the early rounds while he was content to bide his time, it eventually became obvious that the champion had made the wrong decision when finding it difficult to get himself going. A notoriously slow starter, when Mamby (138) did finally begin to apply pressure it seemed to have little effect on the bobbing and weaving Haley, who threw left hooks and overarm rights from a crouching position while coping comfortably with everything coming his way. By the 11th the title seemed to be slipping away from Mamby, and although he began to throw more leather Haley just about deserved the verdict that came his way.

Haley’s first defence would be against Juan Jose Gimenez, the durable Argentinian who had lost to Obisia Nwankpa in a WBC eliminator in March 1981. Despite losing, Gimenez’s performance had been good enough in a tough fight for him to be offered a title shot down the line. A pro since 1968, and a veteran of 86 wins in 98 contests, Gimenez had beaten Hugo Gutierrez, Barry Michael, Antonio Amaya and George Feeney.
