1983-05-20 Michael Dokes drew 15 Mike Weaver, Dunes Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA - WBA. Referee: Richard Steele. Scorecards: 145-141, 144-144, 143-143. Having won the title from Weaver (218½), because of the controversial nature of the contest Dokes (223) was ordered give the former champion a rematch. And once again there was so little between them that it left the door open for a third meeting. The fight started with both men tearing into each other from the opening bell and throwing big punches, but at the end of the session although each had been rocked they were still standing. Thereafter, Weaver took the best that Dokes had on offer, often blazing back, and in the ninth he had the champion badly hurt from a right to the jaw. The fight continued in its intensity with Dokes getting back to his boxing while Weaver continued to look for the finisher, but the last three rounds saw the latter blasting away at his man before the 15th became an out-and-out slugging match. Weaver, who finished the contest with cuts and swellings under both eyes, thought his work to the body and general aggression had won the day for him, while Dokes stated that even though his left hand had gone early on he felt he had done the better work.
