1983-09-15 Ray Mancini w co 9 (15) Orlando Romero, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - WBA. Referee: Tony Perez. In what was a very tough fight, the southpaw challenger gave Mancini (135) all the problems he could handle for eight rounds before he was knocked out by a left hook in the ninth, the finish being timed at 1.56. Right from the opening bell Mancini had forced the pace, punching well to the body, while Romero (134¾), who was always happy to counter with solid lefts to the head, cut the former over the left eye at the end of the eighth. Ultimately, it was the extra strength of the champion that gained him the victory, but having suffered serious facial damage it came at a price.
Back in April, the recently formed United States Boxing Association/International (USBA/I) stated that they would be recognising Mancini as the champion. However, renamed the International Boxing Federation (IBF), and unable to do business with Mancini, at the organisation’s first convention in late October they nominated Charlie Choo Choo Brown and Alvin Hayes to contest their vacant title. Having suffered an injury in training, Hayes was replaced by Melvin Paul.
