1984-02-22 Loris Stecca w rsc 12 (15) Leonardo Cruz, Sports Palace, Milan, Italy - WBA. Referee: Marty Denkin. Having given up the European title to get his opportunity, Stecca (122) displayed excellent boxing skills to take the title from Cruz (121½), who was outmanoeuvred, countered crisply with the jab and generally out-thought. Even when Cruz tried to get his punches off he was outpunched, and following a jarring left uppercut by Stecca in the 12th the champion turned away, leaving the referee to call a halt to proceedings at 2.22 of the session.

Having knocked out the highly regarded Bernardo Checa inside three rounds, the hard-hitting Victor Callejas, with 20 wins (18 inside the distance) from 22 bouts, was lined up as Stecca’s next challenger.
