1987-12-05 Evander Holyfield w co 4 (15) Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Convention Centre, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - IBF/WBA. Referee: Randy Neumann. A return match, this one was a bridge too far for Qawi (190), as the champion both outjabbed and outpunched him right from the start. Surprisingly, Qawi showed some of his old form in the third, landing solidly from both hands, but in the fourth Holyfield (187) made his move, and following a two-handed assault he had Qawi over with a left hook. Although Qawi made it to his feet he was soon under attack again before being counted out in a sitting position at 2.30 of the session after being hit by a heavy right to the head.

Prior to the fight the WBA stated that their version of the title was technically not at stake as they recognised 12 rounds as the championship distance, not 15. They went on to say that if Qawi won they would vacate their portion of the title, but would support Holyfield if he was successful.
