1988-04-24 Leo Gamez w rsc 3 (12) Kenji Yokozawa, Korakuen Hall, Tokyo, Japan - WBA. Referee: Bernie Soto. Right from the opening bell Gamez (105) attacked Yokozawa (104½) with jabs, combinations and hooks, before gashing him under the left eye and splitting his lip with a heavy right. Having been dropped in the second round and bleeding profusely, the challenger was rescued by the referee after 1.25 of the third session had elapsed.

After 27 delegates walked out of the WBA convention in October to set up the World Boxing Organisation (WBO), the members of the new body failed to recognise any of the champions, eventually nominating Rafael Torres to meet Yamil Caraballo to decide their version of the championship.

Following Gamez's decision to relinquish the WBA title in February 1989 to campaign at junior flyweight, Bong-Jun Kim and Agustin Garcia were matched to find a successor.
