1988-11-11 Virgil Hill w rsc 10 Willie Featherstone, Civic Centre, Bismarck, North Dakota, USA - WBA. Referee: Steve Smoger. Dominating the contest with the left jab the champion proved to be too good for the tough Featherstone (174), who despite getting through with an occasional big right was unable to follow up any advantage he may have had. Dropped by a countering left hook in the third and cut under the right eye in the sixth, Featherstone was up against it when he slipped over in the seventh. Starting to throw more rights in the ninth Hill went after Featherstone in the tenth, and following a big right uppercut that sent the latter across the ring and into the ropes the referee stopped the fight on the 2.05 mark.

Following much dissent at the WBA convention in October, in which 27 of the 71 delegates walked out, the World Boxing Organisation was formed. A few weeks later, after Michael Moorer (175) stopped Ramzi Hassan (173¼) inside five rounds to win the vacant Continental Americas title at the International Exposition Centre, Cleveland, Ohio on 3 December, the WBO recognised him as their first world champion at the weight.
