1990-10-10 Dennis Andries w rsc 4 Sergio Merani, Royal Albert Hall, Kensington, London, England - WBC. Referee: Franz Marti. Making the first defence of the title he had regained for the second time, Andries (173¾) temporarily looked as though he might lose it quickly after Merani (173½) made a confident start when winning the opening two rounds. What was not known at the time was that heavy rights and lefts from Andries at the end of the second had broken Merani’s jaw. The third session saw Andries get right back into the fight, and in the fourth although the challenger kept going it was apparent that there was something wrong with his jaw, which led to an inspection by the referee. At the end of the fourth when it was discovered that Merani could not open his mouth the doctor advised the referee that the Argentinian could not continue.
