1990-11-18 Chris Eubank w rsc 9 Nigel Benn, National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham, England - WBO. Referee: Richard Steele. In one of the most exciting fights ever seen in a British ring, Benn (159¼) defended his title against his fellow Brit, Eubank (159½), and was shorn of his crown with five seconds of the ninth round remaining. It had been a brutal affair that saw Eubank land the better shots to win the opening two rounds before Benn came back to win the next two despite having to take some damaging punches in the process. Unfortunately for Benn, when his left eye was almost closed by the fifth he began to be picked off at distance. Even though Eubank was given a rest in the sixth after Benn had carelessly punched him in the groin he still had not shaken the effects off in the next session. In the eighth Eubank was dropped by a clubbing right to the head, but he regrouped in the ninth to take the fight to Benn whose left eye was now closed shut, landing heavily before building up a ferocious non-stop attack. With Benn on the ropes and not firing back, he was rescued by the referee in what was considered to be a perfectly timed stoppage.
