1991-05-18 Hector Camacho w pts 12 Greg Haugen, Sparks Convention Centre, Reno, Nevada, USA - WBO. Referee: Bobby Ferrara. Scorecards: 115-112, 114-113, 112-115. Billed for the vacant title after Haugen had been stripped following his championship win over Camacho on 23 February, this time round the latter made sure of victory when getting off to a good start. Strangely, the man from Las Vegas never really came to terms with what he had to do until it was too late, and it was not until the eighth when Camacho (138½) began to tire that Haugen (139) got himself going. At that stage it was noticeable that body punches would be Haugen's best form of attack, especially when Camacho kept complaining about them. From there on in, Camacho, clutching for dear life at times, but try as he might Haugen was unable to remove him. Having had a point deducted for slapping Haugen after the bell to end the 11th, after Camacho jumped out of the ring at the end of the fight obviously thinking that Haugen had won he had to be recalled on the announcement of the verdict.
When Camacho forfeited the WBO version of the title in March 1992 for failing to defend against Oba Carr, the latter was matched against Carlos Gonzalez to find a new champion. Carr was eventually replaced by his stablemate, Jimmy Paul, when he pulled out of the fight with three weeks to go.
