1991-12-07 Rafael Pineda w rsc 9 Roger Mayweather, Sparks Convention Centre, Reno, Nevada, USA - IBF. Referee: Mills Lane. Contesting the title vacated by Julio Cesar Chavez, neither man did too much to deserve a championship shot prior to the sixth, Mayweather (140) being content to jab occasionally before moving backwards, while whenever Pineda (139) went forward he was often left lunging with wild punches hitting the air. The sixth finally saw both men landing with solid shots, Pineda with two left hooks and Mayweather with a right hand being the pick before the fans were forced to sit through a passive seventh. With boos ringing out, at least Pineda tried to get his left hooks away in the eighth, but following a lecture from the referee in the ninth for more action a huge, sweeping left hook left Mayweather flat out and obviously beaten. Not even bothering to count, the referee eventually stopped the fight on the two-minute mark after he made sure that Mayweather was okay.
