1992-05-15 Michael Moorer w rsc 5 Bert Cooper, Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA - WBO. Referee: Joe O’Neil. Contesting the vacant title, boxing went out of the window as both men brawled their way through the fight as if it was their last. The action had barely got underway when Cooper (224½) had Moorer (217) in difficulty on the ropes prior to dropping him with lefts and rights. On getting up and being battered on the ropes the latter found a southpaw right hook that put Cooper over. Up at about ‘six’, Cooper lasted out the round before immediately going on the rampage in the second. It was blow for blow in the third, Moorer being put down again from six unanswered heavy shots. Although forced to take the mandatory ‘eight’ Moorer came right back with solid blows of his own. And in the fifth he began to outfight the courageous Cooper, now cut over the left eye. Following another fierce bout of fighting the referee rescued a groggy Cooper on the 2.21 mark when he had just about made it to his feet at ‘nine’ after a left hook-right uppercut had downed him.

After Moorer relinquished the WBO version of the title in February 1993 in order to make himself available to challenge either Riddick Bowe or Lennox Lewis, George Foreman and Tommy Morrison were matched to find a new champion.
