1992-09-26 Ruben Dario Palacios w rtd 8 Colin McMillan, Olympia, Kensington, London, England - WBO. Referee: Jess Andreasen. Having won the title with aplomb it was a bitter disappointment for McMillan (126) to lose so quickly into his reign. But before the injury which put him out of the fight occurred he had been rocked in the third and fifth rounds and generally battered and cut between the eyes by a man thought to have little chance. Although his better boxing still had him slightly in the lead, the eighth round saw McMillan in desperate trouble having dislocated his left shoulder. At that stage, Palacios (124), now cut over the right eye, cut loose for at least 20 seconds before the champion’s corner threw the towel in at 1.52 of the session.

Following the fight, McMillan was out of the ring for over a year while Palacios forfeited the WBO version of the title when he was pronounced HIV positive on 16 April 1993, the day before he was due to make a defence against John Davison. With the promoters in a quandary, Steve Robinson was rushed in at 24-hours notice to meet Davison for the now vacant title.
