1994-12-17 Dariusz Michalczewski w co 10 Nestor Giovannini, Alsterdorfer Sports Hall, Hamburg, Germany - WBO. Referee: Genaro Rodriguez. Stepping up a weight division, Michalczewski (181) showed his class when unseating the champion after knocking him out at 1.25 of the tenth round. The fight did not warm up until the fifth when Michalczewski forced a count on Giovannini (182), who slipped over rather than being punched, while in the sixth the German fell foul of the referee when he was deducted a point for pushing. Although Giovannini, cut over the left eye in the fourth, scored well with overarm rights and left hooks it was Michalczewski’s solid left-rights that began to dominate proceedings. Dropped heavily by a left at the end of the ninth, when Giovannini failed to recover properly he was eventually undone by another cracking left after being set up by solid blows from both hands.
Michalczewski vacated the WBO version of the title in January 1995 after failing to secure a defence against Thomas Hearns and deciding to continue as the WBO light heavyweight champion. Following that, Carl Thompson, the former British and European champion, was matched against Ralf Rocchigiani for the vacant title.
