1998-04-18 Carl Thompson w pts 12 Chris Eubank, Nynex Arena, Manchester, England - WBO. Referee: Roy Francis. Scorecards: 114-113, 114-113, 116-113. In what was his first defence, Thompson (189), who had to dig deep after being badly hurt in the second round, was dropped in the fourth by a right uppercut and almost floored on several further occasions as the former WBO middleweight and super middleweight champion looked for a finish. In the fifth Eubank (186½) picked up a swollen left eye as Thompson regrouped, and it was this injury more than anything that changed the way the fight went. From the seventh onwards Thompson won five of the six remaining rounds despite having to take some heavy shots, while Eubank was exhausted and beginning to come apart at the seams by the end of the tenth. He bravely continued, but at the final bell he was desperately holding on as Thompson, throwing punches from both hands, was making sure that his title would remain in his hands.
