1999-03-13 Fernando Vargas w rsc 4 Howard Clarke, Madison Square Garden, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA - IBF. Referee: Wayne Kelly. Making his first defence against the little-known Clarke (154), the new champion had said that he wanted to fight a top opponent but ended up meeting a man who squeezed into the ratings after defeating Jason Papillion. Although Clarke started confidently enough, before too long Vargas (154) was firing in solid combinations to head and body. By the end of the third round Vargas was going far too well for Clarke. Dropped on one knee from a left to the body in the fourth, Clarke was in real trouble on getting up, and after being floored three more times he was rescued by the referee at 2.29 of the session.
