On 27 May, Dawson relinquished the IBF title to negotiate a rematch against Glen Johnson for the WBC ‘interim’ title and Tavoris Cloud was matched against Clinton Woods to find a successor. Both men had won eliminating contests, Cloud beating Julio Cesar Gonzalez (w rsc 10 at the Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, Illinois on 8 August 2008) and Woods defeating Elvir Muriqi (w pts 12 at the France Hotel, St Helier, Jersey, England on 14 Februaru 2009).
