29 March (102lbs) Harry McDermott w co 10 (20) Mike Small, Standard Theatre, Gateshead, England. Referee: J. T. Hulls. Billed for the English 102lbs title it was one of the greatest fights seen, Small being blinded by his own blood almost from the opening bell. So fierce were McDermott’s attacks it seemed that Small would be blown away, but the gallant Londoner met his rival blow for blow, even outpunching his opponent at times, before succumbing to a tremendous blow to the jaw in the tenth that laid him out for the full count.
On 19 May, McDermott made the point that it was the English 100/102lb titles that he was claiming, not the 104lbs championship that was in the hands of Walter Croot, but if the latter wanted to accommodate him at the higher weight he would be more than willing to comply. Although Croot accepted the challenge the following day, the fight never took place as he quickly outgrew the weight class, while McDermott released his hold on the 100lbs title.
