Line 1: Line 1:
1878-04-04 Tom Allen w disq 5 (finish) Charley Davis, The Skating Rink, Cambridge Heath, London, England. Referee: Charles Conquest. Billed for the English title and contested in gloves under MoQ Rules, Davis, outweighed by almost three stone, was a badly beaten man when his trainer deliberately entered the ring to automatically get his fighter disqualified. He had been severely hurt several times and had been dropped in the second and fourth before pluckily coming out for the fifth. With little left, Davis was treated to some heavy uppercuts that put him down for three further counts prior to the fight being concluded. Ultimately, Allen (189) had proved far too big for his outgunned rival, the finish being timed at 2.25 of the session.
