Line 1: Line 1:
1878-04-07 (148lbs) William McClellan w disq 16 (finish) Mike Donovan, 13th Street Masonic Hall, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. Articled to be contested under MoQ Rules for the American 148lbs title, in the event it appeared to get confused with London Prize Ring Rules, lasting 30 minutes (55 minutes according to the New York Herald), with several rounds ending earlier than the required three minutes. The paper also tells us that ‘ordinary’ gloves were used. Coming into the 16th round it was clear that McClellan (148) was already badly beaten, but after he had been smashed to the floor by Donovan (140) the latter was disqualified for hitting on the break. At that point, McClellan was carrying a swollen left eye and a badly damaged nose and would have found it difficult to continue for much longer.
