1878-05-18 (148lbs) Mike Donovan w disq 8 (finish) William McClellan, Colonel Monstery’s 36th Street Fencing Academy, Manhattan, NYC, New York, USA. The New York Herald reported the fight as being contested at 148lbs under special rules, but as in their first go there was much confusion, with the action lasting just 15 minutes (18 minutes according to the Herald) after McClellan’s seconds pulled him out and got their man disqualified. The report went on to say that, contested in hard gloves, Donovan (145) punished McClellan (146) throughout and the latter could have been badly hurt had it carried on.
