27 July (110lbs) Tommy Hawkins drew 31 (finish) Joe Fowler, St Helen’s Grounds, Rotherhithe, London, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Billed for the English 110lbs title, wearing two-ounce gloves and £15 a side, Hawkins weighed 109lbs to Fowler’s 110. The fight was stopped after two hours and four minutes and declared a draw by the referee when it was too dark to see. There was only one knockdown, Hawkins going to his knees early on, and was reasonably well contested. The Sporting Life reported it as an exhibition of pure science, hard hitting, dogged perseverance and endurance. Both men were marked up and Hawkins finished with his left eye closed.
