1879-11-27 (154lbs) Denny Harrington w disq 18 Alf Greenfield, The Baths, Lambeth, London. Referee: Charlie Conquest. In a match supposed to have been made at 154lbs, Harrington (168) risked his title claim when taking on Greenfield (150) and coming in 18lbs heavier than his rival. Even then Harrington should have been beaten, only winning when hit several times while on the ropes and successfully claiming he was fouled. On 25 February 1880, articles were signed for a world title match between Harrington and Leicester’s Tug Wilson at 154lbs, but it never took place due to police vigilance. A few days earlier, on 18 February, Jem Brock had outpointed Young Dyer over three rounds at the Somerset Arms Public House, Whitechapel, London to win an English championship competition at 154lbs.
