1880-01-20 (142lbs) Jim Goodwin drew 41 (finish) Joe Thorley, Loveday Street Argyll Rooms, Birmingham, England. Articled for 142lbs, to a finish in gloves under MoQ Rules, the fight had barely started when Thorley (142) was dropped, but he got up to fight his way back and there was never much between them. Round after round ensued with both men carrying severe facial damage and Goodwin (140½) suffering a sprained right hand. Still they battled on until 35 rounds were completed, but from there to the 40th hardly a blow was landed. Told to summon up everything they had left it was clear that both men were extremely weakened and after they slumped down at the end of the 41st the referee decided upon a draw. There was no further activity at 142lbs until 1884 when Bill Chesterfield Goode and Johnny Robinson challenged each other several times without ever getting round to deciding anything.
