1880-05-17 (140lbs) Andrew McLaren w rtd 5 (finish) Billy Steel, Wallace’s Irongate Gym, Glasgow, Scotland. Billed for the Scottish 140lbs title, McLaren (137) outclassed Steel (139) right from the start and in the second round the latter should have been disqualified when his seconds entered the ring to pick him up after he was floored. Taking a real pasting in the third, Steel somehow stayed in the fight and in the fourth he surprised just about everyone when seemingly throwing himself down. Continuing to batter away at his rival’s badly damaged nose in the fifth, even McLaren was astonished when Steel held up his hands and retired himself. McLaren claimed the English title at the weight on winning.
