1884-07-30 (140lbs) Nonpareil Jack Dempsey w rtd 22 (finish) George Fulljames, Seguins Point, Staten Island, NYC, New York, USA. Referee: Ned Mallahan. Meeting under London Prize Ring Rules in hard-kid gloves, Dempsey forced a retirement after 41 minutes and 37 seconds of fighting when Fulljames, who had been decked several times, had been knocked down by a blow to the chest that took everything out of him.
Billed as a lightweight title fight despite the reported differences in the weights - Dempsey was stated to be 137lbs by the New York World, 140 by the Ring Record Book and 145 by the Chicago Tribune, while the London-born Fulljames was shown as 126, 156 and 124lbs, respectively. Many historians have shown this to be a contest for the middleweight title, but on the day of the fight Fulljames was quoted as saying that he would be 128lbs to Dempsey’s 140.
Regardless of the weights, from thereon Dempsey would be considered a middleweight and in early 1886 bequeathed his American 140lbs title claim to Jack McAuliffe.
