1886-05-27 (126lbs) Dave Burke w pts 20 Dido Hopwood, Epsom, Surrey, England. Although there was no mention of this being a championship glove fight, in later years reports give it as a defence of Burke’s English 126lbs title claim, a claim he had earlier made on 13 February. According to reports the fight was evenly contested, with Hopwood shading the first three rounds. Eventually, Burke improved and almost knocked his rival out with a right to the jaw in the sixth. It was Burke’s condition and good left-hand lead that ultimately won the decision.

Following Burke v Hopwood, Sam Blakelock was reported on 6 October as having won a championship competition at the weight when beating Tom Sterck, while Burke also won a championship competition when outpointing Fred Johnson over three rounds at the Blue Anchor Public House, Shoreditch, London on 12 October.

Bill Whatley was another man to win a championship competition when outpointing Charlie Cheese over three rounds at the Royal Aquarium Theatre, Westminster, London on 26 March 1887.
