1887-06-17 (136lbs) Jem Carney w co 11 (finish) Jimmy Mitchell, Long Island Sound, New York, USA. Referee: Frank Stevenson. Contested under MoQ Rules on a barge, it was billed for the world 136lbs title (despite it being advertised as 133lbs, the weight that Carney was meant to meet Jack McAuliffe at) after Mitchell substituted for McAuliffe. The report stated that light-tan gloves of the thinnest kind were used and from the sixth round Mitchell (136) was punished severely and badly cut up by Carney (136) before being dropped twice in the 11th, the final occasion seeing him counted out.
