1887-08-15 (144lbs) Arthur Bobbett drew 13 (12) Sam Baxter, Paradise Street School of Arms, Lambeth, London, England. Referee: J. T. Hulls. With Bobbett billed as the English 144lbs champion and Baxter well below that, despite a lack of billing and weights Bobbett’s title claim would almost certainly have been at stake regardless of him not pursuing it. Bobbett, the heavier by about ten pounds, made the running but Baxter was always always hitting back and from the sixth round it was give and take all the way. Interestingly, an extra round was contested in order for the judges to find a winner.
On 26 November, George Wilson won a 144lbs championship competition when outpointing Anthony Diamond over three rounds at the Peter Street Grand Circus, Manchester. While Diamond looked to have well won it, Jim Kendrick was also claiming to be the English 144lbs champion and in May 1888 he went to America in pursuit of furthering his claim.
