1887-09-03 (140lbs) Young Mitchell drew 40 (finish) Peter Boland, Albury, Australia. Held on a bush site just outside the town, it was not shown as a title fight but, set at 140lbs, would have involved Mitchell’s title claim at the weight following his draw against Jack Hall. The report from the Sydney Bulletin stated that the fight was a desperate affair that was fought in a rain storm and was concluded after 40 rounds when both men agreed on a draw. At that stage Mitchell had been cut to pieces and it had only been Boland’s indomitable puck that had kept him going.
From thereafter it is believed that Mitchell moved up among the middleweights.
