1887-09-03 (140lbs) Young Mitchell drew 40 (finish) Peter Boland, Albury, Australia
1887-09-03 (140lbs) Young Mitchell drew 40 (finish) Peter Boland, Albury, Australia. Held on a bush site just outside the town it was not shown as a title fight, but set at 140lbs it would have involved Mitchell’s title claim at the weight following his draw against Jack Hall. The report from the Sydney Bulletin stated that the fight was a desperate affair that was fought in a rain storm before being concluded after 40 rounds when both men agreed on a draw. At that stage Mitchell had been cut to pieces, and it had only been Boland’s indomitable pluck that had kept him going.
This would be the last time that Mitchell made 140lbs and he was soon up among the middleweights.
