1887-12-01 (126lbs) Bill Reader w co 15 (finish) Dave Burke, Paradise Street School of Arms, Lambeth, London, England. Billed for the English 126lbs title under MoQ Rules and using ordinary gloves, it was an open contest up until the ninth before Burke tapped Reader’s claret. Burke looked stronger at that point, but after a round or so it became relatively even again until the 15th when Reader hurt his rival with a right to the jaw before following it up with a blow under the ribs to enforce a countout. Another claimant to the English title was Bill Baxter, who won a 126lbs championship competition at the Royal Aquarium Theatre, Westminster, London on 6 March 1888 when outpointing Charlie Mitchell on points over six rounds.
