1888-02-18 (150lbs) Alec Roberts w pts 12 Alec Burns, Paradise Street School of Arms, Lambeth, London, England. Referee: George Dunning. In a rematch, Roberts (146) eliminated Burns (149) from the title race when collecting the decision after a rattling good contest. Both men were down in the eighth, but in forcing the fight from early on Burns had weakened himself by the halfway stage and that point Roberts took full advantage. Roberts showed a great left jab and much cleverness, while Burns proved himself to be a great competitor who carried a heavy punch in both hands.
Towards the end of February 1889, Ted Pritchard challenged the world, preferably Nonpareil Jack Dempsey, to decide the world middleweight title at 150lbs. A few days later Bill Chesterfield Goode accepted the challenge, on the proviso that the winner should take Dempsey on for the world title.
