1888-06-01 (120lbs) Frank Murphy w co 5 (15) Jack Williams, Private Gym, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Made at 120lbs, using two-ounce gloves, Murphy, who had arrived in America a few weeks earlier claiming the world title at 118 and 120lbs, put paid to his fellow Englishman in the fifth round after dropping him heavily. Showing himself to be quick, clever and strong on the inside, Murphy had Williams over twice in the opening session before going to his knees in the second as the latter came back strongly. By the fifth, with his left eye badly swollen and taking a pounding to the body, the plucky Williams was eventually put down for keeps after taking a tremendous right to the jaw. Having secured his 120lbs claim, Murphy went on to meet Jack Havelin at 118lbs.
