1888-07-27 (144lbs) Jim Kendrick drew 15 Jack McGee, Fair Play Club, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Referee: Jimmy Colville. Made at 144lbs and contested with small gloves, the Irish-born Kendrick, who was claiming to be the English champion at all weights between 138 and 144lbs, looked to have had the best of this against McGee, the only man to beat Paddy Duffy. Although both fighters agreed to continue, the referee brought matters to a close at the end of the 15th, the stipulated distance. Kendrick had also performed decidedly better than Duffy in a four-round no-decision bout on 11 July, before returning to Britain. Back home, however, despite continuing to challenge all and sundry he was never the same again and died of consumption on 23 August 1898 aged 34.
