1888-08-20 (136lbs) Ben Seth drew 8 George Wilson, Rutland Hall Rink, Leicester, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Billed for the English 136lbs title, but not over a championship distance, the decision was met by uproar after the local man, Wilson, came back strongly towards the end. To outsiders, however, Seth appeared to win despite his body-work coming under scrutiny.

Having moved to Australia in September, Seth took on another Englishman, Jack Hall, at the Apollo Hall, Melbourne on 10 November. Given Australian title billing at 138lbs despite being contested over eight rounds, while no weight was given for Hall, his opponent was reported to scale 137lbs.

Following this, George Holden challenged all England on 4 September and Dick Burge challenged Anthony Diamond in a match that would decide the English 136lbs championship. On getting no response, Burge next challenged Sam Baxter over 20 rounds.
