1888-12-03 (102lbs) Billy Holmes w pts 10 Patsy Sheehan, Pelican Club, Soho, London, England. Referee: Robert Watson. Although being contested at catchweights, following his win over Sheehan (99lbs) Holmes (102lbs) claimed the English 102lbs title. In what was an extremely well-fought contest it was noticeable early on that Holmes was by far the most skilful of the pair, and when he went on the attack Sheehan lacked the generalship required on going toe-to-toe. This was the story of the fight, Holmes proving to be good value for his win.
Earlier, in April, Tim Buckley was reported as being the champion by The Sportsman, while Tim Sullivan (who had outpointed Pat Daley over four rounds in an English championship competition on 14 November at the Perseverance Public House, Bloomsbury, London) was also claiming the 102lbs title.
