1889-01-26 (115lbs) Cal McCarthy w co 5 (finish) Harry Walton, Trenton, New Jersey, USA. Initially thought to have been decided not far from NYC, what is clear though is the fact that it was contested in kid gloves and recognised by many as being for the American 115lbs featherweight title, with McCarthy (114) being named as the champion and Walton (110½) the challenger. McCarthy controlled the fight, dancing around and hitting Walton with rapid straight lefts before putting him down for the count in round five. It was reported that Walton had flopped around the ring like a chicken with its head cut off.
