1889-03-05 (126lbs) Mike Cushing w rtd 14 (finish) Harry Bartlett, Clifton Race Track, New Jersey, USA. Contested in skin-tight gloves, Cushing had the best of the fight throughout, punishing Bartlett to head and body. After being thrown on his head in the 11th Bartlett claimed a foul, and in the 14th with things going against him he’d had enough. Cushing, who claimed the 126lbs world title on the result, made no defences as such and lost his next three fights at the lightweight limit before retiring.

In England, Harry Mead outpointed Reuben Baxter over four rounds at the Royal Agricultural Hall, Islington, London on 27 April 1889 to win a championship competition at the weight.
