1889-03-05 (90lbs) Jem Stevens w rtd 6 (8) Ted Hooker, King’s Arms Public House, Bethnal Green, London England. Although just an eight rounder it was recognised as involving the English 90lbs title. By round four, Stevens was seen to be scoring most of the points, and in the sixth he drove Hooker to the ropes where the latter was badly cut on the forehead from a head clash. With Stevens in full flow, Hooker’s seconds pulled their man out of the contest just before the end of the session.
After Stevens quickly moved up in weight other men who claimed this honour during the next two years included Enos Gamble (July), Tiny Bishop (September), Alf Buckingham (October), Syd Wallace (December), Mike Lanigan (June 1890), Unc Williams (September 1890) and Harry Munro (December 1890).
