1889-03-19 (133lbs) Jim Carroll w co 16 (finish) Sam Blakelock, Californian Athletic Club, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Tom Cook. Made at 133lbs with small gloves, and billed for the world 133lbs title, Carroll (131¾) was badly weakened in having to shed weight from 153lbs just ten days earlier. It would tell on him later. Fairly even up to the tenth, in that round Carroll sent in a terrific right to the jaw that knocked Blakelock (132½) down, repeating the dose in the 11th. After four rounds of trying to floor his game opponent again Carroll finally found another big right in the 16th, and that was that for the night. This was the first time that the ‘pivot’ blow had been used (by Carroll) to gain an unfair advantage and it would quickly be banned.
