1889-03-29 (142lbs) Paddy Duffy w disq 45 (finish) Tom Meadows, California AC, San Francisco, California, USA. Referee: Hiram Cook. According to the Sporting Life this was a title fight, but the San Francisco Chronicle only made mention of it as being a contest at 142lbs between Duffy (139) and Meadows (l41½) with both men using small lace-up gloves. Incidentally, although Meadows, who was downed five times before being disqualified for a low blow, was billed out of Australia he had actually been born in England. For Duffy it would be his last fight as he tragically contracted tuberculosis before passing away at the early age of 26 on 19 July 1890.

On Duffy's untimely demise there emerged several claimants, the most notable being Tommy Ryan.
