1889-04-05 (115lbs) Cal McCarthy w co 6 (finish) Matt McCarthy, Long Island, New York, USA. Referee: Al Smith. Held in a resident’s ballroom in skin-tight gloves and billed for both the American and world 115lbs featherweight titles, with both men coming in at 114lbs, Matt McCarthy was dropped four times in the fifth round and barely made it to his corner. Although he should have been retired, the badly beaten fighter came out groggily for the sixth and lasted just 15 seconds, including the count, after being smashed down again by a right to the jaw.
