1889-04-05 (115lbs) Cal McCarthy w co 6 (finish) Matt McCarthy, Long Island, New York, USA. Referee: Al Smith. Held in a resident’s ballroom in skin-tight gloves, and billed for both the American and world 115lbs featherweight titles, Matt McCarthy, who was dropped four times in the fifth round, barely made it to his corner. Although he should have been retired the badly beaten fighter came out groggily for the sixth, lasting just 15 seconds which included the count, after being smashed down again by a right to the jaw. Both men made 114lbs.
