1889-08-19 (144lbs) Harry Nickless w co 15 (finish) Alf Suffolk, South London School of Arms, Kennington, London, England. Referee: C. Ford. The first nine rounds were evenly contested, both men going with the left, before the tenth saw the turning point as Nickless continually swung his dexter mitt to Suffolk’s head to make him groggy. Although Suffolk (138) struggled on gamely the end was in sight and after the bell sounded for the 15th Nickless crashed in several right hands before sending his rival to the floor to be counted out on the 2.15 mark. Contested at catchweights, Nickless, reportedly in only the third bout of his career, weighed 148lbs (almost certainly a misprint) and laid claim to the English 144lbs title following his victory.
