1889-08-27 (110lbs) Jimmy Kennard w rtd 14 (finish) Billy Murray, Coehos Road Hotel, Troy, New York, USA. Billed for the American 110lbs title, after three tame opening rounds Kennard, known as the St Paul Kid, opened up with both hands and never relinquished his attack thereafter. While Murray fought on with great courage he was sustaining heavy punishment and in the 14th, having just landed with force on Kennard’s jaw, he was forced to retire due to breaking his left wrist. Organised by the Crib Club, it is thought that two-ounce gloves were in use.
